Vince Vaughn is trending on Twitter, although it’s not for an upcoming movie or TV show. Instead, it is for what he did, or didn’t do depending on perspective, during the College Football Playoff National Championship. The National Championship game took place on Monday and saw LSU beat out Clemson. While that would typically be enough to make the headlines, the LSU win has been overshadowed by President Trump’s attendance at the game. Especially as Vince Vaughn was also in attendance. For a fleeting moment, the world of President Trump and the world of Vince Vaughn collided.

A video posted to social media shows Trump and Vaugh meeting up, briefing talking, shaking hands, and parting ways. In spite of the video lacking in audio to confirm what was said between the two, it has already been viewed millions of times, led to Vaughn trending on Twitter, and invited both sides of the political arena to weigh in with their thoughts.

Some have taken offense as what they consider to be Vaughn’s warm embrace of Trump, with some calling for Vaughn to be “cancelled”. Not all who disapprove of the interaction are outright angry, with many instead simply voicing their disappointment in Vaughn instead. Either way, the sentiment of some social media users is that Vaughn should not have positively embraced Trump. Of course, there are those from the other side of the political aisle who have viewed this through a Trump endorsement lens and praised the actor for his performance on the night.

Vince Vaughn and Donald Trump Handshake The Latest Example Hollywood Partisanship

While much of Twitter is focused on viewing this through one perspective or the other, there are plenty who have raised the question of why is it wrong for one person to embrace another with a friendly handshake? It’s a question that seems to be central to why Vince Vaughn is now trending on Twitter. The political landscape of recent years has forced many into picking a side, and that appears to mean staying true to that side in everything they do and in all interactions. Even when those interactions are in public, possibly in front of cameras, and between two high profile people.

Of course, this is not the first time sports and politics have caused an uproar and especially when it comes to a TV personality meeting up with a current or former politician. Back in October of last year a similar debate took place when Ellen DeGeneres was spotted sitting next to and interacting with former President George W. Bush during a Dallas Cowboys NFL game. On that occasion, DeGeneres was forced to take to social media to explain why the interaction took place. Vaughn has yet to do the same, but it remains to be seen why he might need to - as Ellen pointed out previously, “it’s OK to be different” and sometimes different people meet. If anything, every football game is full of different people and as these situations seems to keep happening at football games, maybe football, and not Twitter, is the problem.
