Thanks to the latest edition of Peteypedia, HBO’s Watchmen revealed what happens after the season 1 finale. Created by Damon Lindelof, Watchmen wrapped its tremendous first season in spectacular fashion. Lindelof’s Watchmen, which is a remix of the original comic series from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, ends on a cliffhanger. In the finale, Lady Trieu attempted and failed to absorb Dr. Manhattan’s powers, thanks to Will Reeves and Adrian Veidt. The final scene shows Angela Abar ingesting an egg and attempting to walk on water to see if her husband, Dr. Manhattan, transferred his powers to her.
Throughout the season, after every episode, HBO released documents regarding topics and characters from the episode in their Watchmen tie-in website, Peteypedia. This website contains files, memos, and clippings that have been entered by Laurie Blake’s FBI Partner, Dale Petey. Peteypedia allows Watchmen to expand its universe past the show and, sometimes, reveal information that can fill in the blanks for viewers. Previous versions of Peteypedia have revealed that Rorschach’s journal, which was famous in the comics, was finally published, along with a version of Batman existing as a black man parodying Nite Owl.
After the Watchmen season finale, Peteypedia revealed the fates of both Agent Petey and Agent Blake. In a turn of events, the memo was not written by Agent Petey, but by the FBI’s deputy director, Max Farragut (David Andrews). According to Farragut, Petey was no longer an FBI agent and his employment by Anti-Vigilante Task Force had been terminated. Not only were his files, which make up Peteypedia, removed, but the contents of his office were up for grabs, including a “jug of canola oil.” Although not officially confirmed, the canola oil implies that Agent Petey was Lube Man, who famously glided through a sewer drain after a confrontation with Sister Night in episode 4. Farragut continued to state that Petey had gone missing and was at risk for “vigilante behavior,” meaning Lube Man could be out in the world.
Farragut also explained what happened to Agent Blake after his disappearance. In the finale, Blake was last seen with Looking Glass as they apprehended Adrian Veidt for killing 3 million innocent people on 11/2/85. Farragut wrote that Blake had “resurfaced” and was debriefed as to what happened as well as the discoveries she made over the course of her investigation. Farragut ended by relaying a message from Blake, in which she wanted to thank “those who cared for her pet owl while she was away.”
After the Watchmen finale, many fans are ready to have all of their questions answered in a new season. However, there are no plans for Watchmen season 2 as of now. That being said, Lindelof did not close the door entirely, saying that future seasons of Watchmen could stand alone, like anthology series such as American Horror Story and Fargo, if and only if it involves a new idea. Until then, Watchmen fans will have to wait to see if Lube Man ever turns up again.
