A new teaser for HBO’s upcoming Watchmen TV show was released today, and confirms the drama series, based on DC characters, will have a fall 2019 premiere date. The DC universe has been increasing its television and film footprint over the past couple of years, including the announcement of a new show based on the Watchmen comics. HBO is known for creating mature, dark and exciting content for their viewers, and the teaser video reveals the new show will likely follow suit.

The popular DC comic series, which began in the 1980s and was written by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, has been subjected to numerous failed film adaptation attempts over the years. In 2009, the comics were finally adapted for the first time into a live-action superhero film, and was generally well regarded by critics and fans alike. The 2009 film was directed by Zack Snyder and featured an impressive cast-list, including Jackie Earle Haley, Malin Åkerman, Patrick Wilson and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Ten years later, Watchmen is getting another live-action adaptation, and the timing couldn’t be any better considering the popularity of other recent DC adaptations, such as Patty Jenkins’ 2017 film Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot, not to mention the host of DC TV shows on DC Universe, The CW and beyond.

The HBO series will be set in an alternate history where superheroes are treated as outlaws, much like in the comics, and claims to “embrace the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name while attempting to break new ground of its own.” The teaser for the new show, produced for HBO by White Rabbit in association with Warner Bros. Television, reveals many exciting things. Rorschach will of course be an important character, and the teaser shows a group wearing matching inkblot masks. As in the Watchmen comics, and the 2009 film, a Rorschach like character narrates in the teaser, and says: “We are no one. We are everyone. And we are invisible.” In between each phrase, the viewer can hear a tick-tock sound, which turns out to be a theme throughout the video. The group even chants “tick-tock” in the background, and the teaser ends with a mysterious older man eerily saying the phrase as well. Watch the teaser below.

The teaser photo shows Angela Abraham, portrayed by Regina King, who, in the casting description, is described as a fierce and independent cop, as well as a wife and mother. King’s face is covered in the photo, and she wears a black hood over her. Her police badge is worn around her waist. The teaser video also focuses a lot of attention on King, so it is likely that her character will play an integral role on the show. The new HBO Watchmen series comes from executive producer Damon Lindelof, and will also star Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, and James Wolk.

Fans of DC will have reason to get excited as HBO aims to remain true to the original Watchmen comics. The good news is, they won’t have to wait long to discover whether or not HBO achieves that goal. Despite the repetitive “tick-tock” in the teaser, the premiere is only a few months away, slated for release this fall.
