HBO releases the first trailer for season 3 of Room 104, showing the unexpected places where the anthology series from Marc and Jay Duplass is headed. The series is part of the pay cabler’s more experimental late Friday night lineup that includes the animated series Animal (also from the Duplass brothers), as well as the very good Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas, the new A Black Lady Sketch Show, and High Maintenance, which recently made the move to Sunday nights.

An episodic anthology that tells a new story set in the same hotel room each week, Room 104 is free to explore a wide variety of genres and filmmaking techniques, and from the look of things, season 3 is going to get weirder than ever before. The first season was a fascinating mix of horror, comedy, drama, and simpler experimental filmmaking, taking audiences to some fascinating and unexpected places. Season 2 upped the ante, bringing in more guest stars like Michael Shannon and True Detective season 3 star Mahershala Ali.

The Duplass brothers are up to their old tricks in the season 3 trailer, which not only hints at the kinds of stories that will be featured, but also who will appear as guest stars. Though the trailer plays up an appearance by Luke Wilson, it also leaves room for Dale Dickey (True Blood), Paul F. Tompkins (BoJack Horseman), Sam Richardson (Veep), David Paymer, Arturo Castro (Alternatino), and more. Check out the trailer for Room 104 season 3 below:

With a healthy dose of comedy and some mind-bending visuals that look as if they’d be at home on a particularly bizarre run on Adult Swim, Room 104 season 3 appears to be leaning more and more into the experimental side of things. That suggests each episode’s creators have been given great freedom to explore the kinds of stories that interest them most, which, in turn, seems to be how the series continues to nab the level of talent it does.

While it’s difficult to pinpoint what, exactly, any of the episodes will actually be about, the appeal of Room 104 really comes down to its willingness to go to unexpected places and to tell the kinds of stories that usually aren’t part of the average television diet. If anything, the new season will make for some compelling late-night Friday viewing.
