WarnerMedia Entertainment’s HBO celebrated their Christmas with an image of Henry Cavill’s CG-lip Superman from the increasingly debated and talked about Justice League film. The relationship between HBO and DC seems to be growing at every turn, as the network recently concluded the first season of the critically acclaimed, and audience dividing TV series, Watchmen.  Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen has not only found critical acclaim, but has also been a ratings hit for HBO, and the best performer since Big Little Lies. The TV Series is also just one of the many ties DC and HBO have right now.

Back in October, during an investor event, an announcement was made in regards to HBO’s new streaming service HBO Max. HBO chief content officer Kevin Reilly announced that “DC movies would soon become the exclusive streaming domain of HBO Max.” Every DC film, including the recently released Joker, and every Superman and Batman film in the past four decades will have a streaming service home for at least one year come May 2020. In addition to the DC films, the streaming service will be getting new DC content, including a Green Lantern, Strange Adventures, and DC Super Hero High TV show. If the DC/HBO relationship wasn’t clear enough, HBO even tweeted out an interesting image of one of DC’s primary superheroes to celebrate the holidays.

On December 24th, HBO Asia tweeted out an image of Ben Affleck’s Batman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and Henry Cavill’s Superman, with all three characters wearing some sort of Christmas headwear such as reindeer ears and Christmas trees. The tweet reads, “Have a Merry Trinity Christmas!” followed by a #JusticeLeague. Unfortunately, that meant the image we got of Cavill’s Superman was the terrible CG-lip version of Superman from Joss Whedon’s heavily reshot Justice League, which was originally directed by Zack Snyder.

The Justice League film is an incredibly hot topic that seems to be gathering steam with each passing week due to the Release the Snyder Cut campaign. Snyder himself has encouraged this movement by releasing unseen images of Superman and Lois Lane, and even Black Suit Superman. HBO has even felt the force of the campaign in the past, making the choice of the Superman image even more interesting as it will remind fans, especially the Snyder Cut campaigners, about the disappointment that was the 2017 film and why they want to see the Snyder Cut.

Man of Steel and Batman v Superman might have been better choices to get a more polished image of Cavill’s Superman, and it would have still had the desired effect for HBO’s tweet. Instead, we received a comical reminder of Justice League’s glaring flaws, and perhaps an image that will fuel the desire of fans that little bit more to see Snyder’s unreleased version of the superhero ensemble film.
