Despite a series of disastrous leaks in season 7 and further leaks in season 8, Game of Thrones’ series finale hasn’t been leaked online… yet. Both the season 8 premiere, “Winterfell,” and the second episode of the season, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” were accidentally released online by streaming services hours in advance of when they were supposed to air. Then, clips and screen grabs from the next two episodes appeared online, including clips that gave away major character deaths.
That being said, you’ll still want to exercise caution while exploring Game of Thrones discussion forums and hashtags online, as what has leaked are details of major plot beats from the season finale. Spoilers for season 8, episode 5, “The Bells” were also leaked well in advance of the episode and proved to be true, so there’s a very good chance that the leaked details about the season finale are true as well. In the lead-up to the episode airing on HBO, there will likely be a few wandering internet trolls trying to spoil it for fans online, so it may be worth avoiding social media altogether until you’ve seen the episode.
Very little has been revealed from the Game of Thrones series finale, aside from a brief teaser and a couple of promo photos. There are plenty of plot threads to be wrapped up after last week’s controversial episode, in which Daenerys seemingly lost her mind at the sound of the bells signalling King’s Landing’s surrender, and began burning the city to the ground with Drogon. Now Tyrion and Jon must decide whether to continue serving their Queen, or to follow Varys’ example and try to kill her before her reign of terror continues.
Game of Thrones premiered on HBO in April 2011, and now eight years of speculation and excitement has built up to this final episode. All HBO has to do is keep it off the internet for a few more hours.
