The Harry Potter series wasn’t really about romance, but romantic relationships did take up some space in the books as the main characters got older. Since Harry always wanted a family, seeing him find love in romantic relationships and eventually start a family was absolutely thrilling. So, when Harry ended up with Ginny, many fans saw this as a positive addition. However, other people also felt like the relationship came out of nowhere and wasn’t the best choice of a romance for Harry. Is it possible that Harry’s first girlfriend, Cho Chang, was a better match?
Here are five reasons Harry should have been with Cho and five reasons why Ginny was the right choice.
CHO: HARRY HAD FEELINGS FOR HER EARLY ON
While Ginny might have been in Harry’s orbit from the beginning because she was Ron’s sister, he never really saw her as more than that until much later on. With Cho, on the other hand, Harry had a crush on her pretty much from the moment he saw her. While having a crush doesn’t necessarily make two people a good match, it does indicate that Harry had a natural attraction to Cho and was paying attention to her from the get-go.
GINNY: THEY GOT TO KNOW EACH OTHER AS FRIENDS
While having a crush on someone can be a good thing, sometimes starting out a relationship as friends first is even better. While in the beginning, Ginny had a crush on Harry and was really awkward around him, as they got older, they became friends. They hung out together at the Burrow and also at Hogwarts more and more as time went on. This allowed them to grow a foundation of friendship and getting to know each other before they ever started dating.
CHO: THEY HAD A CONNECTION BECAUSE OF SHARED TRAUMA
While Harry wasn’t that good at handling it, the fact is that Harry and Cho had both been through almost the same trauma after the death of Cedric Diggory. While Harry didn’t really know how to process this outwardly, Cho did. Harry definitely didn’t react to any of this very well, but in many ways, Cho could have been a good person for him to work out some of his trauma with. He also could have had the potential to help her deal with what happened to Cedric.
GINNY: HARRY ALREADY FIT IN PERFECTLY WITH GINNY’S FAMILY
As far as a long-lasting relationship is concerned, especially the one where you want to get married and have kids, getting along with your partner’s family can play a big role. Because Harry was practically a member of the family already, and always wanted a family to call his own, becoming an official member of the Weasley family is a rather beautiful thing. This makes the extended family situation rather seamless and leads to a lot of joy for both Harry and Ginny.
CHO: CHO WOULD HAVE CHALLENGED HARRY TO BREAK OUT OF HIS COMFORT ZONE
While there’s definitely something to be said about Harry finally finding a family, the fact is that he also doesn’t really break out of his comfort zone. He seems to spend most of his life with Ron, Hermione, and the Weasleys…and that’s about it. Having someone who would push him to get to know new people and be a little less insular would also be a positive thing. In this way, Cho definitely would have been a positive person in Harry’s life and could have introduced him to new horizons.
GINNY: GINNY KNEW WHO HARRY REALLY WAS
While Cho definitely didn’t just see Harry as a celebrity, she didn’t actually get to know him all that well on a deeper level. Ginny, on the other hand, interacted with Harry a lot over the years when he would spend time with her family. This means she knew much more about him as a person, and she was able to see beyond his celebrity status. Ginny definitely knows more about his real personality, his strengths, and also his flaws.
CHO: HARRY’S CRUSH ON GINNY SEEMED TO COME OUT OF NOWHERE
While the relationship between Harry and Cho was somewhat built up, the one between Harry and Ginny wasn’t so much. Harry’s internal thoughts reflected he had budding feelings for Cho starting in his third year, and then things progressed over the next couple of years. On the flip side, Harry never really showed any romantic interest in Ginny at all until his sixth year, and even then it wasn’t planned out or introduced in a gradual way.
GINNY: THEY HAVE A LOT IN COMMON
Another thing that is a good indicator of a strong relationship is having some things in common. In this way, Harry and Ginny definitely make a better match. They have spent a lot of time around each other over the years, so they do get to know a lot about each other. Plus, they also have some common hobbies, such as Quidditch, which means they would have a lot to talk about and activities to enjoy doing together.
CHO: HARRY BASICALLY LEFT GINNY BEHIND MULTIPLE TIMES
One of the things that doesn’t make a lot of sense about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is that Ginny isn’t able to come along with the trio. This means that Harry basically breaks up with her not once but twice. She definitely is more of an interesting character than this, and this doesn’t really indicate them having an inseparable relationship.
GINNY: THEY GOT ALONG REALLY WELL
While Cho and Harry might have had some potential, in the end, they didn’t really work out. This is largely because they didn’t get along that well. They didn’t really understand one another completely, and they ended up arguing constantly. However, Ginny and Harry seemed to get along pretty seamlessly when dating.
